A maid in a small town in India has been paid $30,000 by her employer to give her diamond necklace.
A family friend of the maid, who lives in a poor area of Uttar Pradesh state, said she was looking forward to the necklace, which was given to her in August 2016 by her father who had recently moved to the town.
A maid named Nalini has lived in the village of Bajaurh for a year and a half, but has only earned about $2,000 per month.
She has a daughter but her family does not have enough money to support her.
She has also been struggling to feed her daughter and two children.
“I have lost my mind,” said Nalinis mother Shikha.
“I have been struggling with depression and anxiety.”
“The necklace was bought for her by my employer, but it was a gift from my father who moved to Bajurh from a small village near the city of Lucknow,” said Shikra.
Nalini’s father is also from a poor community and the family had been struggling for some time to provide food for their daughter and the children.
“My mother and sister-in-law were forced to work in the fields to support their families.
It is difficult for them to feed themselves now.
I was also forced to go to work to support my family.
I am worried about my daughter and daughter-in, sister- in-law,” said a distraught Nalina.”
I feel I will never be able to afford a good quality of life like mine.
My children do not have any schooling, so they cannot read or write,” she said.
According to the Bajurgh Municipal Corporation, about 10,000 people live in Bajoorh, a town of about 4,000, but the average income in the town is less than $2 a day.
The town of Bakhchha, also in Uttar Pradesh, is home to around 10,600 people, but only about 20 per cent of them have any education.
Bajur, a small city of 5,000 in Uttar, is a poor district with low literacy rates and unemployment.
The district has around 25,000 registered cases of child marriage, according to the Uttar Pradesh Human Rights Commission.
In Uttar Pradesh’s northern state of Bihar, the situation is even worse.
Hundreds of thousands of children are forced to marry before they reach the age of 18, and around a million are married before they can go to school.
Thousands of young women are also sexually abused.
