The Seahawks are adding another veteran quarterback to their roster, signing Matt van der Weg to a 5-Year, $27.5M contract, league sources told NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport on Monday.
The deal, which kicks in after the Seahawks’ bye week, also includes a $2.6M signing bonus, according to RapopORT.
The signing is a major coup for the Seahawks, who have been in free agency the past two weeks.
“This is an opportunity to add a veteran presence to our team,” Seahawks general manager John Schneider said in a statement.
“Matt will help us in many ways, and we expect him to contribute immediately.”
A second-round pick (No. 52 overall) of the Texans in 2016, van der Doeg has made 33 career starts and has thrown for 4,942 yards and 19 touchdowns.
His completion percentage of 56.8 is second-best in the NFL.
His career average of 5.6 yards per attempt ranks 15th among quarterbacks with at least 600 attempts.
“We believe Matt has the talent and experience to continue to develop in our offense, and he will contribute immediately to our success,” Schneider said.
“He is an extremely talented player who can provide stability for our offense.”
Van der Wegt is the second quarterback to sign with the Seahawks this offseason.
The Seahawks acquired quarterback Chase Daniel from the Cardinals in a trade last week.
The 23-year-old signed a three-year deal worth $11.5 million in March.
